Crystal properties are what make each crystal special. In my previous blog choosing and buying crystals I talked about how to choose crystals. What, though, if you see a crystal you want to buy and you don’t know much about it? It’s easy to say ‘take a good crystal book with you’- but obviously you can’t have one available at any moment!

So what can you do?

As every crystal has properties in common with other crystals, it is useful to know the ‘basics’ to know what your crystal can do for you. Here’s some hints that could help you decide:

First property: colour
Colour is important in helping to distinguish crystals. If you are familiar, even a little, with colour therapy these properties are true also for crystals.

As a reminder:

  • – Black: focus, absorbing extra energy, protection
  • – Brown: security, protection, comfort, reliability.
  • – Red: power, energy, strength, passion, stimulating
  • – Pink: peace, sensitivity, simplicity, emotional
  • – Orange: vitality, joy, harmony, creativity
  • – Yellow: energy, happiness, self-confidence, contentment
  • – Green: cleansing, inner peace, optimism, balance
  • – Blue: calm, relaxation, honesty, inner strength
  • – Violet: inspiration, spiritual freedom, inner calm, intuition
  • – White/clear: clarity, purity, cleanliness, support

Second property: shape
You don’t need to be a gemologist or a geologist to know that crystals grow in particular shapes because of the arrangement of their atoms. I’ve already described the ‘ideal’ configurations and properties in rocks and crystals where I talk more about crystal and their shapes.

Of course you know that these are ideal shapes and crystals also grow in other non-standard ways or habits (if you wish, find out more here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crystal_habit).

You may wonder whether these ‘irregular’ crystals have the same properties as crystals growing in their ideal, regular configuration. I believe that this is the case and at times they might even have special uses (like in the case of some Quartzes).

Third property: hardness
This property is important because hardness is a factor when ‘cleansing crystals’. All crystals absorb energy and the harder the crystal the longer it will take to absorb energy. A soft crystal will get ‘exhausted’ faster than a hard one so when used in healing, it will need to be changed earlier. The Mohs scale help to ‘categorise’ crystals for their hardness. The higher the number the harder the crystal. (https://www.boothandbooth.co.uk/Mohs_Scale.htm)

Fourth property: innate properties
This is what you need to know about each crystal as these innate properties are what make a particular crystal more sought-after or useful. This factor is the most important you have to be aware of before you buy. It is useful to know when you are looking for something specific from a crystal.
Please remember that certain innate properties are common in more than one crystal: you don’t need to buy a particular crystal because only it has this property but if you do your research you might find that other crystals can help too! For instance Malachite and Black tourmaline are great for protection, Moonstone and Lapis Lazuli facilitate intuition and Calcite and Amethyst work miracles as energy cleansers.

Cleansing crystals

Cleansing crystals
Cleansing crystals is a personal thing and with this I mean you have to pick the method that works best for you.
I used to cleanse my crystals in water and sea salt. First I wash them thoroughly then I put them in a glass container filled with water till the crystals are covered. I then add a good pinch of sea salt. I place my crystals in water and salt in the sunlight and moonlight as much as I can because I feel they get double benefit from the liquid and the light. Water and salt was my favourite cleansing method since I started collecting crystals and I always felt that it was the right one for me. However, it never occurred to me that I could cleanse my crystals with sound, smudging, rice and so on. And what about delicate crystals?

Which method of cleansing crystals is best?

I explained in my previous blog Why cleanse crystals the importance of keeping your crystals cleansed, but which method to choose is personal because you need to ‘feel’ your intention to cleansing them. Please bear in mind when you cleanse or charge crystals: where in the Mohs scale your crystal belongs to, water tolerance and sunlight or strong light tolerance.

Here are some examples:

Sound: the high-pitched sound of a bell, a tuning fork, a gong or a singing bowl is ideal to neutralise negativity in the environment and can tune crystals, clearing any unwanted energies they may have accumulated. The vibration is to be repeated till you feel the crystals are cleansed.
Pros: although nearly everything that can be hit makes a sound, it is our intention that stimulates the cleansing process. This kind of cleansing is both practical and portable, can be done anytime and does not depend on external factors such as weather, environment or location.
Cons: if crystals are to be carried for a healing session it would be cumbersome to carry large instruments
for cleansing as well. Better consider a tuning fork, a bell or a singing bowl.

Water cleansing: putting crystals in running natural water e.g. a river or a spring, will revitalise them. When it is sensed that the negativity has gone then the crystals can be put in the sun to absorb fresh energy. This should fully clean them. If a natural source of water is not available, water from the tap will do. A mesh or a container that allows water in to keep the crystals together is recommended.
Pros: Crystals love water, especially quartzes.
Cons: some crystals with low Mohs scale grade such as selenite, or water intolerant types such as turquoise or fluorite can discolour, melt or disintegrate in water!

Sage cleansing or smudging: the crystals are exposed to smoke from dry sage leaves, an incense stick, a burner or palo santo till it is sensed they are fully cleansed. Usually aromatic herbs like sage, woods such as cedar or resins such as frankincense or benzoin are well known for their purifying qualities and so are the best to cleanse crystals as well. Pros: incense sticks are relatively cheap to buy. Cons: this technique needs to be carried out in a well ventilated place to avoid saturating the air. Some people could be particularly sensitive to strong smells and may even be allergic.

Chosing crystals

I’m often asked how I go about choosing and buying crystals.

I usually say it depends on the individual and what the crystal is needed for. Buying crystals is not art but it does require a bit of practice. I have three rules that help me:

Eye tuning

– when there is a range of crystals to select from, it’s the one that attracts and holds my attention that is most likely to suit my future needs. The only proviso to this is that you might end up with loads of crystals or ones that don’t have all the desired healing properties.

Need

– crystals are chosen because of a particular necessity (healing, meditation, colour, etc.). But they may not be attuned to me and so they might not work as strongly as they should.

Attraction/sensation

–  when a range of crystals is available, I choose only the one that clearly presents positive and strong vibrations when I touch or hold it.  It will suit my needs and is finely attuned to my inner vibrations.  Of course to be attracted to a crystal I need to be in a state where I can be finely tuned and receptive to feel the ‘right’ crystal. This isn’t always possible but with time I think anyone can tune into themselves to find what is right.

Naturally, I apply these three rules whenever possible. But if you still feel unsure I would recommend ‘muscle testing’ – where you programme your body to give simple answers yes or no by certain actions. This is the best way to reach a decision without even touching the crystal.

Where do I buy crystals? Well, this also depends where I feel most comfortable. I personally like little shops where they have a broad range, crystals are not overly polished and there’s good energy in the store. I love those places, often outside London, where I can make rare discoveries; but I could recommend a few in London where I’ve been successful.

My story

The crystal in the picture I found by chance.  I saw it in a bric-a-brac store where it was part of the display. It was so beautiful and I felt it was ‘calling me’.  When I asked the assistant the price, she told me it wasn’t on sale! But I knew I had to have it so I tried to negotiate. So I spoke to the owner and offered her a price. To my great surprise, she was happy with it and sold it to me.  To me, it was a bargain because it’s so beautiful and is really powerful.

How to programme crystals

Programming crystals could be done using a passive or an active method.
Both methods lead to the same objective: asking crystals to help us with a specific task or need.

Passive programming

When a crystal is used repetitively while we do something or is exposed regularly to something we are programming it passively.
Passive programming happens when a crystal is exposed to a colour, a plant, a piece of music or a picture or used when taking care of places, animals or people. This also happens when exposing it to a written affirmation . The crystal will habituate itself to this repetitive action and help to recreate the energy, the atmosphere. Crystals also facilitate the actions we are making or help with a written wish.

This method does not involve human interaction very much: we do not ask directly.
Unfortunately this could also mislead the crystal: if we habitually perform something wrongly, unconsciously make mistakes repeatedly, assuming that all is well, the crystal will facilitate the mistakes because it is passively programmed like that.
On the other hand it is important to consider that this programming method is less intrusive because we do not programme our will directly. It is also longer lasting because the crystal will repeat the programme as a habit.

Active programming

The active method involves asking the crystal directly to help us. Please use only cleansed crystals for this! Taking the crystal in our hand and stare at it, rub the thumb of our dominant hand on its surface or one of faces, or put the crystal on our third eye area and – concentrating intensely on it- we ask for help or we say aloud the decree that contains our request. It is important that this should be done with a positive attitude and that what we wish is for the greater good. The process may need to be repeated so that the crystal has the opportunity to become accustomed to this new process.

This method is possibly the most successful because it addresses directly what our needs are. One of the most common programmes is self-cleansing: once the crystals are cleansed they are programmed to self-clean. This is often used with crystals used in jewellery. The benefit of this is that we we do not need to clean our crystals so often. On the other hand, I believe that once in a while everything needs a spring clean.

...and finally

It is extremely important to understand the crystal before programming: it could have been programmed earlier and refuse any other programme. What is more, we need to feel that the crystal has accepted our request and is working according to its abilities and qualities (colour, family, geological nature and innate capacities). Once the crystal accepts the programme it will open its structure to receive it. Then we need to ask the crystal to close its structure and keep the programme within.

Once our request has been realised, the crystal needs to be de-programmed.  Taking the crystal in our hand and stare at it, rub the thumb of our dominant hand on its surface or one of faces, or put the crystal on our third eye area and – concentrating intensely on it- we ask to release the crystal from any programme.

fluorite

Programming is an important part of working with crystals. Crystals perceive our intentions and if we act for the greater good crystals will also help to heal without being programmed. At times though if we need to ask something more specific, programming is the right tool to help us reach our goal.

What does programming a crystal mean?

Programming crystals is to voice our intentions and desires to the Universe and to ask the crystals to work on them with us. It is important that what we ask is for the greater good but at the same time we cannot demand impossible tasks of the crystals. Crystals know already that they are working for us and with us in one way or another but programming is to ask a specific thing.

Once a crystal is programmed its structure is altered to accommodate our request.  Remember: a single crystal cannot work on multiple programmes: it is best to have a number crystals programmed for different purposes. Also crystals have their own innate qualities and healing capacities and these will allow them to work in a specific way. For example, it is better to ask for help with energy and strength from a pyrite crystal rather than a moonstone.

How to programme a crystal

The programme could be instilled during meditation, by holding the crystal in the hands, pressing the thumb of our dominant hand on one of the faces or holding the crystal against the third eye centre. In this position we may imagine surrounding the crystal with light and thinking or saying aloud the intention that we are asking the crystal to help with. The process might need to be repeated till we feel the crystal has accepted it. It is important to know that crystals might refuse the programming and we cannot force them to comply.

My experience

Last year I had bad sinusitis and I programmed a fluorite tetrahedron to help me get rid of the infection. I bought that crystal in November and I clearly remember being attracted to its shape and colours: green, clear and violet. It seemed to call out to me.

I put the crystal on my third eye chakra area and on two different days mentally communicated that I needed its help. On the first occasion the crystal was assertive. On the second, as I rested the crystal on my brow and whispered that I needed help I suddenly saw myself in a fluorescent green cave with my body all permeated by the green light. I could move freely and I could see that my body shape was made of that deep green light and no other colours.
The experience did not last long but it was really intense.
After few days my sinuses improved. I was glad to have chosen that crystal and for the experience that it gave me.
